Got turned on to Eddie with P,J&H in 2020, and it absolutely floored me. Covid summer was made far more bearable with his music and voice, and of course the otherworldly synth work from J. Carroll Kirby. Sundown in 2023 wasn't quite as enjoyable, to me at least, but this new record "Lay Low" really has that magic again.
The songs are here. Good Sun is an incredible opener, and the percussion on the next track "Let You Go" really works wonders. Empire was the first song I heard from this record, and it's what made me pay attention and say "Oh, Eddie's back." The title track really is a favorite of mine, smooth, groovy percussion, delicate piano work, one of Chacon's most sensual tracks yet.
And Birds? Oh my god. The downright Grouper-esque ambient synth opening. He's never made anything this ambient-psychedelic tinged before. He really shows how flexible his voice can be.
Lay Low is a mature album. It must be listened to in the proper setting. Low lights. Old fashioned on ice. Dig it for sure. Solid 4/5 for me. -
More lo-fi soul from Mr Chacon and for me an excellent follow up to Sundown. Some beautiful songs on hear with Lay Low being a particular favourite. If you like his previous albums you will love this.
