long story short.
b2 is not only the highlight of this wonderful record, it's one of the 1997's.
dry, punchy, gritty
what a year...
what a track...
If I were to compare this to anything else I'd say this sounds like Surgeon's Syllable transcribed by the late 90's HLX. pure gold. -
referencing Cosmopolitan (12") Sounders Dept. 003
"Redox" This is a reference track for anyone interested in perfect structure and development for a minimal techno number, lets break it down:
0-30sec - just a kick and a synth chord. its totally dry, its good for mixing in. Also the riff is pure funk, and the closing filter on the last note pulls it all together, i could listen to this on repeat for about an hour
30sec-45sec Start adding some delay, then some gated snares come at the end of the bar
1m-2m, The groove continues, some manipulation of delays and texture of those snares, but the groove keeps kicking
2m08sec.... and a fade in of the hit-hat... followed by heavier fx of those snares, there"s a lot of manipulation and movement in the higher frequencies, but the kick and the riff just are totally constant and locks the dancefloor
2.m48sec....Whats this? Dialing it back a little, clearing some space in the mix for.....
3m01sec.... an unexpected variation! LFO'd filter sweep on the main riff
3m.40sec it doesn't last long, and we are back to the main riff, with a snare on the backbeat added, and it just pumps on. In a DJ set I'm already starting to mix out by this point usually.
4m40sec The LFO filter sweep is back, then it goes again and fades out.
This track has all the essential elements of being a deadly dancefloor number but with no extras at all which would take it into possible cheese territory, or distract from its raw power. at the same time there's a lot of movement, manipulation and variation in it without being distracting or jarring in anyway whatsoever. To the untrained ear it probably sounds very repetitive, and it is on a fundamental level but the other things happening in the higher frequencies is what gives this track more than raw dancefloor appeal. An extremely effective and artful dancefloor destroyer.
