I believe Discogs could be more useful if there were more instruments available in the credit list.
How about these:
Viola d'amore
Viola da gamba
Baritone (closely related to euphonium)
Serpent
Ophicleide
Sarrusophone
Heckelphone
Oboe d'amore
Basset horn
Saxello
Crotales
Siren
Lion's Roar (no joke! - used for instance by Varèse)
Ondes Martenot -

How do you perform a Lion's Roar?
Do you credit whoever's poking the lion with a stick? -
Show this post
You don't poke it with a stick, you pull the horsehair!
- no kidding: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion's_roar
It's a genuine percussion instrument; somewhat similar to the cuica (= already in the credit list) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cu%C3%ADca -

Why not keep three of them with respectively:
Viola [L'Amore]
Viola [Da Gamba]
Oboe [D'Amore]

@ mikkelhansen
you miss the point of the original thread...
The point is not adding everything into the creditrole-list, but adding as many as "we" can.
I don't really know these instruments, but if these are valid shits :) these shall be on the list ;) -

we definitely need "Tam-Tam" -

Your suggestion for those above is ofcourse perfectly ok, but I don't understand why you would keep only these three; they can already be used that way.
I just would like to see more specific instruments available in the list, without having to specify them with square brackets.
A lot of separate percussion instruments are already in the list, and this saves space on lot of releases in the Discogs database.
So why not go for "Crotales" as a valid role instead of "Percussion [Crotales]"? Or "Tam-Tam" instead of "Percussion [Tam-Tam]" or "Gong [Tam-Tam]"?
The same goes for "Ondes Martenot" - a relative of the synthesizer family, but not entirely electronic (part of its sound is generated mechanically, with a sort of "tam-tam"!), so I would consider this aseparate instrument.
And since more and more submissions in the classical genre are appearing, some of the other instruments could prove to be useful as well... -

Since it is a different instrument (with 12 strings instead of 11 or 10 for the Oud), it definitely should be a standalone role.
You see, it was already realised for:
Temple Bells instead of Bells [Temple Bells], or
Contrabassoon instead of Bassoon [Contrabassoon] and a lot of others.
It would be nice to have more specific creditroles like these... -

OK... we'll wait for it. nik sometimes add new credit roles like these, but dunno when he will do this next time. -

It's always good to show internet sources, instead of just dumping a list of instruments not even backed up by information to prove the validity of what you affirm.
Viol [Viola Da Gamba] <-- Violas Da Gamba is just another name for a Viol. -

These have Ondes Martenot credits, while it's not in http://discogs.descargarpelis.net/help/creditslist !?
One of two possibilities:
1) They pre-existed the standardized credit list (there are all sorts of credit issues throughout the db dating from several years back)
2) They were allowed to be added through an explanation in the mod notes - non-listed credits can be allowed on a case by case basis with proper justification

Ebow

This was requested in the s forum, but here's what nik replied:
nik
E-Bow -> This is an electronic device that vibrates guitar or other magnetically influenced instrument strings. As such, it is no different from a pick or bow, such that it isn't an instrument itself, just a method of producing vibrations in the string. it should be entered as Guitar (E-Bow) most of the time. -

I would like to extend the instruments with the following:
Lirone (http://www.owenmorse-brown.com/lirone.htm , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lirone)
Vihuela (either a Mariachi instrument or a renaissance/baroque lute: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vihuela / http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_vihuela ) -

It actually is Bass Clarinet (not as in Flemish).
I'm afraid we'll have to stick with Clarinet [Bass], just like Saxophone [Tenor]...
