"Do Right" was previously recorded by Rosetta Howard & the Harlem Hamfats (1936 as "The Weed Smokers Dream"), Lil Green (1941), Nora Lee King (1941) and Count Basie Orc. (1942).
The song's composer, Joe McCoy, re-wrote the original lyrics, changing the title from "The Weed Smoker's Dream (Why Don't You Do Now)" to "Why Don't You Do Right?"
    Lil's Green's version had a slow tempo.
Peggy Lee was fascinated by Lil Green's recording and played it frequently in her dressing room. Goodman suggested making their own arrangement and they recorded a faster version on 27 July 1942.

Review of 'Do Right' in 'The Billboard - On the Records' November 7, 1942, p. 65:
"A carry-over from the race lists... A typical race blues... The repetitious blues strain is also given a bright bounce beat. Much of the side is turned over to Peggy Lee, who goes out on a Billie Holiday kick to wail that her man doesn't do right like her other men..."
