Took me a few listens to truly appreciate this one as the greatness it is. The undertones of almost hard rock really sell this album for me. Other than the title track I really enjoy "Savior Machine" just something about the instrumental really gets me grooving as well as David's haunting vocals.

Anyone here wondering why it may sound like it has too much bass and hides the guitars, it is most likely because your stylus is not set up correctly. I have a friend who put on a new copy of this, and it skipped sometimes, crackled in spots and was sonically quiet. I immediately noticed the dullness of the sound quality, and when coming to the part of "The Width Of A Circle" where the backing vocals say "turn around, go back!"... I could not hear the "go back" part, and knew something was wrong.
It was because of the stylus' position and cant. Make sure your stylus/cartridge is correctly aligned.
I put on "The Cars: Let's Go" form "Candy-O" and also noticed the "clap" parts when the drums hit were also not being heard. I then corrected the stylus position and could hear the "clap clap, clap clap" part.
Then when I put on the Bowie, I could hear what was previously missing.
It is mucho importante to align your stylus/cartridge properly. Otherwise it will NOT touch the grooves like it should, and will miss certain parts of the songs.
NOT like CDs guys. Just a reminder. -
All releases I've ever heard are really bassy. But for an all-analogue reissue that sounds great and is quite affordable, pick up the 1984 RCA International release, David Bowie - The Man Who Sold The World.

Since this is a Parlophone release, I would have much preferred an actual Parlophone label instead of what appears to be a bastardised version of the original Mercury label. That circle with 'Bowie' in on this label just looks awful. What on Earth were the design team thinking..? It really cheapens the aesthetic appeal. Other than that total mistake, the record itself sounds quite good but as others here have mentioned, its not without its faults. This could have been a prize winning reissue but sadly, it isn't. By the way, although Discogs states otherwise, the sleeve isn't textured, just plain matt finish which is yet another disappointment. My copy has a printed barcode on the back cover, top left, under the cat. no. unlike the picture shown here which is a stickered barcode and therefore is obviously nicer. I hate barcodes on records. Overall, with more care and attention, this could have been so much better...

I got curious on all the comments about the prominence of the Bass tracks. I read the review on AllMusic which comments on the thin guitars and heavy bass. Assuming for a moment, that AM has access to a pristine pressing (stream?) then it would suggest Bowie intended this effect, and it is not a "fault" or "feature" of any one pressing, but a presentation of what the artist wanted and intended. This LP sets the foundation of who and what a phenomenon David Bowie would become, and presages Ziggy and the eclecticism DB would illustrate through the decades of his briliance. Rega P6 with DynaVector 10x5.

I had to bring it back to the records shop, as the last minutes of "after all", end of side 1, has loud crackles as if it was a very old record (though I bought it new and sealed)
Indeed, the bass is very loud on this release, I wonder if it was a Visconti mix! as the bass overshadows the guitars! ... which I think is not respectful to Ronson's work!
-
Ecellent remaster and pressing. And wait until you hear that bass on the first track: it will blow you away.

BASS IN YOUR FACE. Same as the Ryko CD, same as the 70s editions. Heavy Metal Bowie, some good tunes, some so-so. Gotta be in the mood. "All The Men" is still sadly true and timely.
