Of all the “books” recorded by Ervin in the mid-60s, this is his masterpiece. Some may argue otherwise. The other albums are amazing, no doubt, but here Ervin and the band get everything right. And the Van Gelder production is perfectly matched to the arrangements—all those Coltrane sessions RVG was doing for Impulse! obviously paid off!
