Extra Annotations:
"Be Stiff" is a separate unused mix of the 1978 single.
"Goo Goo Itch" contained here uses the same musical basis as the 'Hardcore Vol 2' version with a completely different vocal track recorded several years after the fact.
"Bushwhacked" came in an edited form on a flexi-disc included in a Aug 1988 issue of Reflex Magazine.
"Faster and Faster"/ "Modern Life" were released as music extras to the 1999 video game 'Interstate '82'. -
The 4 LP + mini-CD version of this release includes four short spoken tracks not on the CD version:
A1 A Neccessary Response With Jerry Casale
B7 Conscious Mutation with Mark Motherbaugh
C7 Mental Warfare With Jerry Casale And Mark Mothersbaugh
F7 We Are Unique With Jerry Casale And Mark Mothersbaugh
...as well as side D track 1 Ton 'O Luv (Instrumental Demo)
and the entirety of sequence: (H)
H1 Before Babydoll There Was Satan With Mark Motherbaugh
H2 Satan Rm (Pre-Baby Doll)
H3 Red Alert (Unreleased)
H4 Sad Song (Unreleased)
H5 Mind Games (Demo)
H6 Later Is Now (Instrumental Demo)
H7 It's Not Nuclear Bombs You Must Fear With Booji Boy -
Edited 11 years agoGreat compilation of Warner Bros years demos (with some Hardcore era and post-Warner-pre-Enigma demos). Sound quality is surprisingly great, considering they were coming from rotting reel to reel and cassette tapes. The material itself shows the evolution of the material to how they got (or didn't get) onto the album. Highlights include: The Day My Baby Gave Me A Surprize, Luv & Such (Mr. B's Ballroom with different lyrics), Gotta Serve Somebody (the band masquerades as a Christian Rock band and covers Bob Dylan with Booji Boy!), The 4th Dimension, Modern Life (Best song on the album), and Happy Guy (almost the same as the TD version, but I got a soft spot for that song). The packages comes as a large double CD case, with liner notes describing the the recording of each of the songs, and a poster showing the R2R covers for many of the recording on this album (and some that aren't!). Hunt down this rarity if you're a true fan of Devo. Here's hoping for Sequences C and D!
