Edited 3 years agoWhile some techno enthusiasts don't like it when some of us call this Proto-Goa or early Goa Trance, it's just a fact that some of the best tracks of the time, from whatever genre they came from, if they made it to a Goa Trance dance floor in Anjuna Beach, became the inspiration for the "Real" Goa Trance tracks that came after. There is a certain sound and vibe that many of us identify as the "Goa Sound" and this track has that sound. Of course these tracks were not labeled as Goa Trance because the genre was just emerging. The first time I heard the label "Goa Trance" was from Goa Gil in San Francisco in May of 1992 when I heard him spin for the first time. He had many of these types of tracks on his mix tapes in those early days. If I was to do a history of Goa Trance set, this track would definitely be in it and I think most Goa Trance aficionado's would understand why it would be played. Even Infinity Project called his 1991 releases Techno and he [Raja Ram] is one of the Godfathers of Goa Trance so for those who want to split hairs and feel offended...well why? Those of us who are serious collectors of Goa Trance have only found maybe 20 tracks from 1988 to 1991 that we would call "Proto-Goa" so please don't worry, we are not trying to co-opt your techno genre. To have a 'Techno" record labeled as Goa Trance or Proto-Goa, to me, would be an honor because only the most high quality, unique , deep and trippiest tracks made it to Anjuna Beach in the very early 90's. I know because I was there. Peace.

Edited 5 years agoYes. This may come as a shock to some but there was such a thing as computer created dance music before 'GOA TRANCE', and guess what, it's where GOA TRANCE originated. We called it 'EUROPEAN TECHNO' and 99% of it was better than any 'GOA TRANCE' will ever be. It always makes me laugh when tracks like the remix of SUNDOWN are described as 'EARLY GOA TRANCE'. It was just EUROPEAN TECHNO being played by Dj's in Goa before there was a GOA TRANCE scene. I suppose Kraftwerk were 'EARLY EDM' in that case. This track will still be fresh when GOA TRANCE has been long forgotten. Check out the entire 'New Zone/BOY' back catalogue if you want to hear some proper music. Originators. GOA TRANCE MY ARSE.
P.S. I've been to Goa a few times and like some of the GOA TRANCE stuff but it's not the only benchmark for e-dance.
This however IS !!! CHOOOOOEWN!!!!!!!!! (ON BOTH SIDES AS WELL) -
Classic old school from another time. Glad to add this to my collection! The sound on this is so nostalgic and pre Trance/Goa.

For me this is all about the B side...Poseidon. A side is okay but nothing out of the ordinary. Poseidon though, well I Colin Dale playing this on the Abstract Dance show, in fact I still have it on tape. It's a deep track with a lot of feel to it, its moody and melodic, I've no idea what the vocals are about (as stated below they are in German) but that just adds to the captivating experience be honest. Beautiful listening Techno.

Yet another one of those missing link between New Beat and trance records that have been forgotten by time. You even had the hippie messages on the cover and everything: "The Gulf War is over. However this doesn't mean everything is alright again. Everywhere in the world wars take place all the time. We did produce that record to remind you that the 20th Century still is the 'Time of War'." Pretty prophetic message when you think this was made at the beginning of the 90s. Anyway, on to how it sounds: pretty much a crossblend between New Beat and trance but also some very distinctive goa-ish melodies in there which make listening to this totally worth it IMO.
The AC Mix (might be mixed by AC Boutsen but not sure since it's not specifically mentioned...) has some female voices that are NOT Anne Clark although it sounds very much like it.
DD 1000 Mix is basically the same track but without the vocals and a bit faster.
Poseidon is slower and has some german speaking (sorry I don't speak german so I don't have any idea of what they're saying). This one also has a pretty mystical goaish melody in it, not bad but I prefer the A-side. Definatlely worth it for people interested in the old trance scene. -
The 2nd Gulf War is over, and this it's still a "time Of War"
An hypnotyc pre goa-trance tune with cool Anne Clark style - female vocal.
On of my all-time favorites.
