Edited 2 months agoI have a Blue Note 2021 release and one of Wax Time 2012 European reissue.
Could anyone describe how this 85 reissue sounds like panning wise?
Because on the WaxTime it's more classic and in the center (which I prefer), but on Blue Note trumpet is artificially (or at least unnaturally) panned all to the left, and sax to the right and I hate it...
It sounds MUCH MORE realistic on Blue note if we're talking about the sound of each instrument individually, but the way it's mixed and panned... So, could anyone share how it's done on this release? Do trumpet and sax sound more close to each other, or there is a "black hole" between them? )
Thanks. -
Edited 5 months agoThis record sounds phenomenal besides the nonfill causing a swoosh and tic in the quieter parts of the album. Had to return it and was forced into an uncomfortable situation with my local shop, who were reluctant to take the record back. What a shame since the music was clearly so beautifully mastered!

Has the same non fill audio issues on side one as the classic series version. I bought this one, hoping it would be better. It’s equally as bad. I guess I have to stick with the SACD.

My first purchase of the 85th Anniversary Edition and I am not disappointed, unlike my DOL version. Although the DOL is okay, but its clearly a digital copy transferred to vinyl, and the label wasn't the standard Blue Note insert. (Not sure what bothered me most, the label not being Blue Note or the digital transfer). However, the 85th edition seems to make up for the DOL copy.

My 3rd BN85th on blue vinyl and its a 3 for 3 situation where the pressing seems of higher quality than the black equivalent. This could be in part down to the fact these now use the poly'd inner paper sleeve so come alot cleaner. Many of the black variants often had the worst, most static ridden paper inner ever supplied with a record and this made them a tad noisy and scuffed in appearance like something from the 50's thats had a few plays. So MUCH cleaner for a start and thats reassuring to see.
Next bonus is theres a lack of any defects across my 3 blue 85ths.... i had to go through SO many copies of the initial black records to get flat, centered and non fill free copies of these records and now with these 85th blue jobs they seem to be perfectly pressed!
Obviously the sound quality is NO different with these and so arguably they are jist completist and collectors fluff but i like how Optimal have recovered and re focused on quality of pressings of late and these blue BN85ths seem to represent that well.
And at the same price as the regular black cut i can only recommend thoroughly. Now IF ONLY the packagaing was Tone Poet/MMJ level!! -
Mix is great. Mine has a few dead spots on side A. Seems to be a repeat of the last pressing with the same hit and miss issues.

Nice special release and addition to my AB collection Cover, record and price value all fine. Nevertheless, can’t touch my Classic Records true mono cut by Grundman which has dominance, presence and foremost that unique direct punch ittedly with a narrower soundstage. Again, more a matter of individual preferences. Of course, keeping both.

Edited 9 months agoSame stamper as the Classic Series reissue so it sounds great as you would expect. Since it's virtually identical to the 2021 reissue, I've actually given that pressing to someone who needs it more. The blue vinyl is obviously a bit of a gimmick (would have been nice to see it paired with thicker card covers like the Tone Poets) but it's honestly just a bit of fun.
No pressing quality issues here. I would obviously recommend picking this or the 2021 classic series reissue up since they sound exactly the same.
