A fantastic album. The gorgeous string arrangements of McFadden and Whitehead combined with early 80's funk make this a slick piece of work. "Let's Stand Together" is a unity anthem, a leftover from the optimism of the Philly era disco but updated perfectly for the 1981 market. "Your Sweet Lovin" is a funky jaunty number that is good to move to. "What a Woman Needs" is great as well, tuneful and funky. "Take My Love" is the funkiest song on here, with it's infectious chant 'You want it, you got it, take my love" and Melba wailing away. Funk fest. "Overnight Sensation" is ok but not one of my favourites as its a bit slow. "Each Second" settles into a slow funky groove that I find more interesting each time I listen. Same for "Piece of the Rock". "Lets Go Back To Lovin" which I first heard on the flip of her 1982 single "Loves Comin At Ya" is my favourite song on here along with "Take My Love". Dramatic, soulful, disco friendly it's a gem. The edited 12" "Take My Love" doesn't add much but "Just You, Just Me" is quite hypnotic. Liner notes feature some interesting anecdotes about why Melba didn't think the lp was a huge success, but pay no mind to chart positions: this one is classy and a must for lovers of boogie, disco AND post disco and quality r and b from the glorious early 80s period of black music.
