Edited 17 days agoClose but no cigar.
I have the ORG 2x45 by Grundman and Bellman and it betters this 33rpm. Theres more dynamic ease, better bass and more bloom/air. The KPG Rhino Hifi trait of maximum brightness and clarity doesnt ruin this one like it has others but i still prefer the ORG. Whats more damning is i would say this is just a shade better than the cheapo Waxtime copy i keep in the dining room for the non audiophiles of the household to enjoy. I think it cost me 1/3rd of this one lol.
No complaints on the quality of the packaging, even if its a little tight as usual. On this front im happy with all my Rhino hifi releases but i just wish so many didnt sound so disappointing. This ones pretty good, but its not one of the best either.
Make sure you get a non fill free copy. It seems to have plagued many of the first Rhino hifi reissues. -
Coltran'e Atlantic output always (to me) sounded as if if there were blankets put over the mics - there's some sort of sonic "gunk" covering the music. This Rhino version does as well as any I've heard to improve things, but the original master is still something of a sow's ear. The music is still outstanding and this pressing is well worth having. KG did a great job of making this album sounds as good as it most likely ever is, at least on 33rpm. And frankly, I don't even know if 45rpm will add much.

Possible to have #0000/5000?
Bought this used at a local record store because I wanted to hear it but then noticed the foil number on the back. -
Edited one year agoDead quiet but sounds like it's cut from a digital source - lacks depth. Sounds wrong I know since it's supposedly taken from the original analog tapes. Not a bad pressing, but I expected a more analog and pure sound. The 2 LP 45rpm ORG pressing is better imo.

Kind of late to the party but here's my take:
This is a very good release but it is not outstanding. I received a good copy. No non-fills, flat and decently quiet. Not as outstanding as on the Marque Moon release but good enough for me (some clicks and pops here and there).
It has decent dynamics, the stereo feel is good and I really like the sound of McCoy Tyner's piano here. It just sounds so colorful that he could well just appear in the album's title alongside Coltrane.
There's two reasons for this not being outstanding to me. First off, the recording is just not good to start with. Kevin Gray's work here is very similar to the Undercurrent reissue on Jackpot he did: He does a great job in increasing quality, but the limitations in the source itself cannot be undone. Second, there is just some final "magic dust" missing to me. I don't know what it is, but it does not have the emotional impact to me that the music could have.
Still, considering this retails for 39,99$, it is a very good release. It remains to be seen whether the Atlantic 75 version will be even better. I am at the moment skeptical whether the A75, given the source material, can achieve jumps in quality that would justify almost double the cost.
If you want a solid version of this album or think the A75's markup is not worth it, I recommend getting this as long as it is still in print.

The shipping experience from Rhino is still lacking, somewhat better mailer, but the record was still loose in the mailer and I received a jacket with seam splits. Mastering sounds wonderful, but sadly non fill through out on both sides, with Central Park west being unlistenable.

I compared Rhino’s “High Fidelity Coltrane’s Sound” featuring AAA mastering by Kevin Gray against both 1st US mono and 1st US stereo pressings as well as the Org 45rpm version. My impression is that Kevin Gray has improved the clarity and quality of the overall sound picture on this contemporary pressing of this classic recording. The “Rhino High Fidelity” pressing didn’t seem to change the feel of the original recording, as it contains many of the driving characteristics within the midrange that I recall from the US mono 1st pressing. What is new is (To my ears) the details of the performance seem to sparkle a bit more on this record than on my earlier copies. Regarding my thoughts on this Rhino record compared to the AAA Org 45 cut by Bernie Grundman, the Org comes out of the gate kicking hotter with warmth and room filling sound stage, but even tho the Kevin Gray Rhino release seems quiet and humble in comparison, the “Rhino High Fidelity” has a consistent/cohesive range of dynamics that seem to work better at most volume levels — it’s this coherent essence that has won me over.

Rhino.com shipping continues to ensure at least one bent corner and often 2 bent corners. Atrocious packaging.
