I never heard this album sounding so damn good (I do not have the mono mix though). Booklet is nice and the second cd is a gift much appreciated.
-
Great for discovering this album, but once you have heard the mono, you can go back to this fake version.
-
this mix is great. the mastering can be a lil' fatiguing, but the set is beautiful and is a great alternative if you can't afford the (superior) mono set, which i cant afford, and wish they put out individually!!!

I'm really enjoying this remix. I like that there are no extreme changes to the original mix. The vocals jump right out at you. The new stereo mixes of PAPERBACK WRITER and RAIN are an improvement over earlier versions, although PAPERBACK WRITER has a lot more punch in mono. YELLOW SUBMARINE is fun with "A life of ease..." added in from the mono mix and the sound effects panned around differently. ELEANOR RIGBY corrects Paul's dropout vocal at the beginning of the track. (These last two tracks were similarly corrected on the YELLOW SUBMARINE SONGTRACK in 1999). The bonus tracks while not essential, are really good. My only complaint would be that the psychedelic effects in TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS are mixed down too low in this version. Although this will never replace the original, it is well worth having. All in all, the best Giles Martin effort to date. -
Edited 2 years agoOverall it is fascinating hearing what the new AI technology has been able to do with the original tapes. I do not know that I will listen to this version of the album instead of the original going forward but I am very glad to have heard it. But the AI does seem to have added some new anomalies to the way things sound. I also think some of the original recordings being mixed so much louder now just makes the limitations of the original tape stand out too much. Notes follow.
The Good:
Taxman - bass causes backing vocals like "Ha Ha Mr. Wilson" to duck down
Eleanor Rigby
Love You To
Here There And Everywhere - good but the instruments mixed higher now take the backing vocals out of focus
Yellow Submarine - great but the funny "Ah ha!" laugh is mixed too low
Doctor Robert
I Want To Tell You
Paperback Writer
Not Bad:
Tomorrow Never Knows - tape effects are often mixed too low - bass causes ducking
Rain - overall good but a bit too harsh in places
Too Harsh:
I'm Only Sleeping - sounds artificial - bass causes ducking
She Said She Said - bass causes ducking
Good Day Sunshine
And Your Bird Can Sing
For No One
Got To Get You Into My Life - not as harsh, but can hear the levels constantly shifting
The Outtake Sessions - very interesting but you will want to turn down the volume
And now an update: I wrote that above from my first listen which was on my Sennheiser headphones. Today I listened to it while I was driving. It is simply perfect for car listening. -
Edited 2 years agoThis and the single CD releases are the only ones that aren't a rip-off. The 5-disc CD box is the worst offender. 2hrs 42mins, over 5 cds?! Dylan's Cutting Edge collection featured 7 hrs of material over 6 discs! Don't get me wrong, the contents are sublime, but what a cheek! Good Day Sunshine? Daylight Robbery.

I have listened to this release on a couple different systems, including high-end studio monitors and a good home stereo. The detail, clarity and imaging are amazing. Giles Martin did a fabulous job. That said, there is occasional harshness and listening fatigue on a couple songs. The presentation and booklet are first rate.

Actually the best sounding Revolver I've ever heard. Hope they will remaster the whole catalogue this way.
