Several compilations were released immediately following Wes' death in '68; this one is a curated set of his early work with The Montgomery Brothers, plus Freddie Hubbard, Harold Land, and one with vocalist John Hendricks. There are horns and/or strings on most of the tracks, added posthumously. This was also done by Verve with the Smokin' at the Half Note sessions. I know, eww, icky. The big band arrangements here are definitely tasty, not corny. Nevertheless, at the core of this release are some great early Wes improvisations, worthy of your collection. His tone is brighter than usual, which allows him to cut through the mix.

Pressing is good, some rumble between tracks, but not a deal breaker. Good EQ in the master.

3 stars. I still prefer the small group recordings without the strings added. There's a great CD compilation from Pacific Jazz, called "Far Wes" grab that instead.
