I had to laugh when I saw The Dust Brothers did official mixes for The Offspring, because of course they did.
With a title like Space Echo Remix I was hoping it'd be some trippy dub far removed from the original tune, but all the mixes on this record–Baka Boyz included–are hip hop conversions of the nostalgic pop punk hit.
Space Echo Remix strips down the guitar with a minimalist upbeat rhythm and nicely showcases The Dust Brothers production skills some with some nice tricks but nothing too wild.
Dust Mix I find more interesting, stripping the guitar even more, though not enough in either to be standalone tracks if they were instrumentals. The highlight here is a really smooth bassline and some really nice keys evocative of the Dust Brothers' more typical oldskool breakfunk. The last verse especially adds in some really smooth tones and gets a little weird like the Dust Brothers usually do. If the instrumental version maybe has less of the guitar track, it'd be a Dust Brothers gem. -
