This is a phenomenal remaster. There's no compression whatsoever, the EQ balance is perfect, and it manages to sound stronger than ever before without sacrificing the idiosyncracies of the mix and production. This is how remasters should be done. I will be buying any future Costello remasters without hesitation on the strength of this alone!
The only real problem with this disc is that there is severe tape damage during "Big Tears", beginning in the second verse and lasting until the end of the song. This is not a criticism of the mastering, which is great like the rest of the disc, but it's a real shame that such a great song was rescued from obscurity but could not be rescued from the effects of age. Fortunately, there are other CDs and records that have the song with full dynamic range without the tape degradation, so it's not the end of the world.
