Special thanks to Paul R. Dickinson Jr. for providing us with the original Trout Mask Replica cover photograph which we thought had been lost to time.
Production Manager: Mealanie Starks
2012 return by W.B. Note: The years in storage in Warners were not kind to Trout Mask Replica. The masters seriously suffer from oxide loss, primarily at the head of each of the four master reels. Fortunately, FZ had Dick Kunc make ‘safeties.’ These actually sound better than the originals and are in excellent condition but alas, incomplete. This edition of Trout Mask Replica is from the ZFT Vault protection copies, transferred at 96K 24B, except for Frownland and Hair Pie: Bake 2 which are from the original damaged master tapes transferred to direct digital at UMRK.
DSD workstation provided by Gus Skinas, Super Audio Center.
Vaultmeisterment & Transfers by Joes Travers, UMRK, 2012.
Mastered by Bob Ludwig, Gateway Mastering, 2012.
Cut by Chris Bellman, Bernie Grundman Mastering, 2013.”
From the insert:
"Special Edition Vinyl LP
Out of print on vinyl for nearly ten years, this remaster was helmed by industry legend Bob Ludwig and cut by the estimable Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Utilizing crystalline-quality safety masters kept in the Zappa family vault for decades by the trustworthy Joe Travers, the audio here is positively glorious. Every last skronk breathes full life into the room. Every twisted guitar figure uncurls onto paths previously unpaved. Every last bark and howl shines resolute through the vast emptiness of your mind.
Previous countless Trout Mask Replica repressings have used scans of scans of scans of the cover image, but for Vault Package #36 the original Cal Schenkel cover photo has been tracked down and reproduced at its clearest - its resolution from the original release in 1969. If you've only ever seen a jpg online of fuzzy, smeared-looking CD issues from the 90's, be prepared to be wowed by the fully engaging spectrum this iconic image casts. This 2xLP is pressed on heavyweight 180-gram fruitcake fish-scale colored vinyl for that full-on frenetic feeling."

Edited 16 days agofar shot here but my friend had his tote bag from this set stolen at a show a while ago. i'd love to hook him up with another so send me a message if you'd part with yours
found a sealed copy of this at a thrift store in dallas for $1, super weird -

Someone outbid me by $1 on an OG press for under $100, so I snagged this off a friend for a deal.
My favorite album of all time, but even if you think it's a pile of dogshit, this pressing is the most dynamic turd you're gonna find. Bob Ludwig could make toilets flushing sound HQ, the greatest. Amazing press but I'd suggest getting the recent repress for the music since this and the represses share the same stampers.
Packaging is A1 as well, there's a reason most of the reviews are asking for the items separate since there's so many it's hard to keep track of when moving a collection around! -

It sounds fantastic, but if you have this sealed I'd highly recommend opening it sooner rather than later. I just opened one and the records have warped due to all the stuff packed into the gatefold. They still play fine but there's a definite bow where the 7" single was packed in, a bit less on the other one.

Edited 4 years agoA superb reissue. The full on frenetic fruitcake fishscale vinyl is silent and flat. The sound is fantastic and makes my Warners reish sound truly crappy, boxy and muddled. This unique, complex music opens up and becomes richer and more legible. Restored front cover, similarly, is a revelation. The card lyric folder is a joy. The tote bag is inspired. Everyone should have this package on their shoulder. The other bits are fabulous too, including the mailer itself. This an object lesson in how to do an archival reissue. Love it!

Wonderful reissue, expertly remastered (but you can't fix cardboard-covered drums in the mix), lovingly packaged with quirky oddities. Gotta "love" the negative aesthetic critiques in some of the other comments in these reviews. Did you really not know about this band's sound before listening, or worse, before buying? OMG. It's like complaining that hip-hop has a beat, or that there are guitar solos on a Jimi Hendrix record. Not only is this a timeless classic of avant-garde rock, the story behind its creation is even wilder, more menacing, and equally important to rock history. Likewise, the nasty history of Zappa's, and the Zappa family business's treatment of CB and of some his recordings has ZERO to do with the importance of this reissue. Too much extra-musical whining IMO: the LP sounds awesome and the special edition additions are "far out.".

Can someone explain what it is your hearing on this record ? I have listened to it 10 times start to finish to find "something of worth" ...and it just sounds like someone throwing knives in a blender lol ...
