Notes
Early pressings have the band named as Special A.K.A. while later pressings use The Specials as the artist.
Recorded for a mere £700 (if the legend is to be believed) and initially distributed by Rough Trade. These Rough Trade issues came with a plain white sleeve stamped by the band themselves with the words THE SPECIAL A.K.A 'Gangsters' Vs THE SELECTER. This stamped sleeve was limited to 5000 copies.
The B side was a demo that was recorded a few years before its release by Neol Davies, John Bradbury and Barry Jones and came complete with its own unique catalogue number. This may seem unusual but was actually quite common with old ska and reggae singles.
The record was the biggest selling independent single of the year.

Incorrectly lists The Specials on both sides as artist on the label.
it was some of the Specials and Noel Davis that did The Selecter in a shed! -
referencing Gangsters / The Selecter (7", Single) K7610
Normally on a Festival pressing one would expect to find the original overseas catalogue number printed on the label under the MX matrix. The story is that the reason it does not appear here is that Festival were in such a hurry to release this single they didn't wait for the master to arrive from the UK and simply purchased a copy of the UK single from the Record Plant in Imperial Arcade in Sydney and mastered their own pressing from that. -
Happy 40th birthday today to 2-tone records and one of the greatest debut singles ever , I always thought there were less quantities pressed of the initial rough trade distributed hand stamped sleeve than 5000?.

Those curious can gain a bit of information here: http://2-tone.info/2tone.pl?show96&
It's still not very clear which were the original 5,000 units without the hand stamped sleeve included. Seems they came in both solid and pop-out center versions. -
