Notes
Originally released on 5 July 1988.
The album was the band's second collaboration with producer Rick Rubin, whose production skills on their previous album Reign in Blood (1986) had helped their sound evolve. Given the frenetic pace of Reign in Blood, Slayer wisely made no attempt to top it on South of Heaven; rather, the band offset and complemented Reign in Blood by deliberately slowing the tempo down on South of Heaven, as well as by utilizing undistorted guitars and toned-down vocals.
It was the band's last album released by Def Jam, although the rights were transferred to Rubin's new label Def American Recordings after Rubin ended his partnership with Russell Simmons. The album was one of only two Def Jam titles to be distributed by Geffen Records through Warner Bros., as Def Jam's then-distributor Columbia refused to release work by the band.
South of Heaven became Slayer's second album to enter the Billboard 200, peaking at number 57.
While some critics praised the change in the band's sound, others more accustomed to the style of their earlier efforts were disappointed.
Nonetheless, the songs "Mandatory Suicide" and the title track have since become permanent features of the band's live setlist.
South of Heaven was later certified gold by the RIAA in 1992.

Qualidade do começo ao fim, Slayer mais uma vez acerta, disco muito bem mixado e gravado. Lendário 🤘🏼 -
Just got my order in from Amazon and was so sure I would be getting the 2023 pressing... but I surprised to open it up and see the plastic lined sleeve and an extremely heavyweight vinyl inside! So.... I guess I got the 2013 press??? Right? Playing it right now and it sounds fantastic!

Just like Slayer - Reign In Blood, this features the original mastering, even if remasters were released elsewhere in the world in 1995. I bought it just for the collection not expecting anything and was pleasantly surprised that it's not the brickwall-remaster.

The colored bootlegs are very much NOT official at all. Besides the obvious crappy printing jobs, the UPC code is taken from the very official GREEN vinyl repress. This is a DEAD giveaway.

Edited 3 months agoThe sound quality on this is pretty flat. Most picture discs will not sound as good as normal wax but these were pressed pretty cheaply and were sold exclusively at Hot Topic. Cool to own IF you already own an older or even the newer 180g pressings.
AFAIK, the Hot Topic pressings are the only ones that have the same artwork on both sides. -

Mastered by Barry Diament, full dynamic range of the stereo mixdown. Audiophile thrash metal; a desert island disc.
