Great album, with a criminally ugly cover replacing the original artwork.

...still one of my favourite albums by charismatic musician fred frith who
made a long way since his debut in 1973 with henry cow. beneath some tracks
with skeleton crew this is the only album where he developed his own vocal
style, mixed with lovely east european influences on violin & guitar. you
will recognise three tracks used in the soundtrack for "step across the
        border"...

I love this!!! I just gave it a first listen and think it's a perfect addition to my collection of outsider music. It's original, and that's a rare thing to my 50 year old ears. It sounds like happy video game music before this kind of sound could actually be programed into a game because of technology limitations. I hope to explore more of his music. Suggestions of what to listen to by him next are welcome.

For my money, this is the best Fred Frith album. The combination of the accessible (but totally weird) pop-ish songs and ambient soundscapes reminds me of Another Green World. I've always hoped he would return to this kind of quirky song-based material, but his subsequent stuff is very improvisational and free.

Fred Frith's three Ralph Records releases--Gravity, Speechless, and Cheap at Half the Price--were collectively released in a box set by Belle Antique. Both sides of the box feature the artwork from Gravity. The spine reads "Fred Frith" against a yellow background. I purchased this box set from a dealer in Japan in late 2015 or early 2016.
