Notes
As legend has it, in the Fall of '74 Dylan went home for the holidays; with him a copy of his new album, set for release in a few weeks. After playing it for his brother, David Zimmerman, he suggested that Dylan re-record some of the tracks, as he felt that the songs sounded too much alike. Dylan halted production and re-recorded half of the songs in Minneapolis. These are the original New York sessions.

Edited 4 months agoSo glad I convinced myself to shell out the £80 (Dec '24) required to purchase what has on first spin established itself as one of my very favourite Bob recordings.
A must for any big fan of the great man. Pure joy on wax -
About time that Sony re-released it in a non limited and well pressed version. The flippers have had their time for now 5 years and this is too important of a document for it to be not readily available

I've always wanted this, but never actually saw one in person until a record show last weekend where I saw 2(!). I had to pick one up. One of my favorite albums of all time. This one, of course, is a mix of different takes, mixes, demos, etc. It sounds amazing (after a SpinClean) and is a fascinating look into the album. It's worth every penny to hear the organ flourishes during Idiot Wind. Pure Genius. -
It is good- but imo not even remotely close to Blood on the tapes. Seems whomever engineered this felt ( like most) yo put their own stamp on it. Voice is more upfront. Less alive, less balanced, less rough and raw.

Bought this on RSD at Rasputin on Haight Street. Opened it up and it was a mess, like a fine white powder all over it, except I didn't realize it was powder until I put it through a SpinClean cycle. Ended up SpinCleaning it four separate times. After that, sound improved markedly because, again, there was some sort of residue all over the pressing.
On my copy, "Tangled Up In Blue" has a persistent and repeating distortion "underneath" the vast majority of the track. The music sort of neutralizes it a little, but it's definitely noticeable distortion. After that, just minor clicks and pops.
Then, on side two, there's a scratch from the run out groove that goes into the first track for about a minute, and creates a not super loud but persistent tick
A friend of mine who got his through mail-order new after RSD told me, "No one got a good copy of this." But evidently some in this review thread did get a good copy, based on the comments.
If you're a Dylan fan, still worth getting, esp. if you like Blood On The Tracks. For me, further proof that the last studio version of "Tangled Up In Blue" is by far the best take of the song. On this test pressing, it's still not the track it would become on BOTT. -

2023 now…will one of these ever be released that’s not over $100? -

Does Simple Twist of Fate sound really muffled for anyone else? It's the only track that sounds muddy compared to the rest and it's really odd. Not a dealbreaker necessarily but I'm wondering if it's like that for others. -
Edited 3 years agoAny buyers of this RSD issue should be aware that this was plagued by pressing quality issues, primarily "non-fill", resulting in distorted ages marred by short "zips". Those familiar with non-fill will understand. Some buyers managed to take advantage of an exchange offer from Sony Music, but it was a very short window and many purchasers missed it. So buyer beware. Even with the pressing quality issues, it is worth owning from a historical perspective because it is the album as Dylan originally envisioned it, before changing his mind and rerecording many of the tracks with a full band in Minnesota. Good luck.
