Mike Oldfield – Five Miles Out

Another cracking deluxe edition that is essential for fans of Mike Oldfield's inimitable music.
The live stuff is eating and drinking!

The Original CD has good dynamics but I always felt the bass is a bit dry.
I have a picture disc from 1989 which was part of three pack.
The 2000 HDCD is louder, more muscular in the bass but definitely more compressed.
I'm happy with all of the CD versions I have.

In reference to a variant, EMI UDEN 8493792 @ 1 1-1-2-NL. The HDCD component sounds like an overlay of frequencies already present, which creates a type of standing wave effect most evident in the sound of the tympani on Family Man. As well, the decoded component boosts the db range making this loud. The undecoded 16 bit component is very close to the original CD release but not as dynamic.

In reference to a third variant, CDV 2222 2893 009 02 CU. An incredibly dynamic and detailed edition. Lower output levels, and no peak distortion.Those who are genetically Celtic may find this music beyond compelling!

This is a terrible sounding release. It’s about as dynamic and rich sounding as a damp sock. Seek out any original pressing. You’ll be glad you did.

I don’t like this pressing and sold it. I have an original which sounds better. The Deluxe CD is the better bet.

Like Mike Oldfield - Crises, this is an another unbelievable-terrific record I listened to hundreds of times when I was a teen. I am so glad I grabbed this copy today, which not only sends me right back to those glorious years of mine, but that it is technically outstanding! A great pressing that sounds just perfect on my sound system. Super happy with it!!!

Sometimes writing a quick review it's easier to pick a poor record from an artist's canon and damn with faint praise. So here goes on a really good record from a really good musician. For the 80s period this is his finest work, the opening 25 minutes a wonderful, ebulient medley of tunes, instrumentation and styles. Some themes here are isolated and taken into greater detail on the following 4 tracks, two of which were hits in the UK. For me though the pinnacle of creativity is to be found in Orabidoo, with its children's toybox start, odd drum patterns, vocodered vox and beautiful melodic resolution. I'm now on my 4th copy of this album.

As someone who grew up with this on cassette, this sounds more detailed and generally more balanced than what I . No major differences from the original sound with a light surface noise. I'm pretty happy with it altogether, glad to have it in my collection.

My copy has catalog# 204 500-610 on back and 204 500 on spine. Reissue?
