Series of Capitol Records created in May 1947 for “Folk” records, which, according to Capitol's promotion of the series, comprised Western music, Hill Country ballads, Blues, and Jazz. The series started with catalog number 40000.
The "Americana" series received its own label design with a red label instead of the black label used for Capitol Records' Pop releases. In addition, the series name "Americana" in a smaller, Western-style type face was added below the traditional Capitol logo. Between late July and October 1947, the label briefly added an A-prefix to the catalog numbers of "Americana" releases; hyphens between the prefix and catalog number only appear on issues released between mid-September and October 1947.
This label design was used for the 40000 series from 40000 in late May 1947 to 40120 in early June 1948.
After that, the series title "Americana" was dropped but releases in the 40000 number block continued until they ended in July 1950 with catalog number 40287.
