hey I am traveling around the world chasing record stores etc and I follow Discogs closely but I must say keeping up with whats still open & whats closed is hard to follow sometimes. Can't we have a central list for each country that is directly updated with closed or not next to it rather than go though all the posts to work it out? After all god knows they need our business as I'm finding out the longer I travel.
That said anyone help me on second hand electronica & hip hop stores in Paris?

Thanks for your reply btw. I have visited Bimbo Tower yesterday on of your recommendation. It is really a place to see. Lots of wierd, obscure stuff. Full of noise/experimental electronics, and guitar music from the milder kind of stuff till the very harsh, hard to find japanese records. There are also some books and artworks if I'm not mistaken.

I was at the artwork/bookshop called Lazy Dog, where I met a very friendly chap, who told me that Silly Melody, Silence de la Rue and Betino's are a good place to find some great electronica-hiphop.

i'll be in paris for a couple days, so does anyone know the best shops for old techno, house, and disco? and how far away would these shops be from the big tourist attractions? (lourve, etc.)

unfortunately, we've had quite a few record shops closing recently. it's actually starting to be quite hard to find oldschool stuff in paris. you'd better be off looking in second hand outlets such as boulinier or silly melody (both pretty central).

as for disco i'll let others answer as it's not exactly my cup of tea.

MY ELECTRO KITCHEN is mainly techno. That should be added to the description. Very cool shop and worth a look for foreigners. Lots of newer releases from good techno labels: wagon repair, ghostly, brontosaurus, etc

Silly Melody has all second-hand on the street outside, and it looks like some new stuff inside (the shop is upstairs, above a bookshop, with both books and vinyl on the street when it's open).
I was there a few weeks ago and scored some cheap 1980s New Wave LPs from the secondhand section.
They also had some fairly rare Punk 7" singles, but they were all too expensive for me.

Does anyone Faster Pussycat, on rue des Taillandiers?
It was a clothes and record shop, and their (mostly Indie) vinyl was arranged by label (in 1987), with an almost complete set of 4AD and Factory releases.
A shelf high above the counter had most of the Sordide Sentimental 7" singles.

i used to live in paris round 79/80 and Champs disques(as well as Lido Music just down the road) were the shit when it comes to disco, i still have so many great rekids i bought there, went to have a look at the pasage were it used to be last time i was over just for the memories.

whatup everyone. I've been livin in paris for almost half a year now and been record diggin since the very first day I came here. My primary interest is underground rap of the mid 90's- to early 00's (especially French/Parisian stuff like "Le Puzzle" or "Harcelement Textuel" as well as typical US boom-bap like "Rezidue" or "Shadez of Brooklyn"). Upon the recommendations here these are the places I've been to:

CROCODISC (super knowledgeable employees & great selection of french rap)
SILLY MELODY (great 2nd hand wax for decent prices)
BETINO's (great selection & friendly staff)
BOULINIER (THE Mecca for crate digging in Paris - been to both - the one at St.Michel & the one close to the RER B stop CiteU)

My question: Considering my taste in music, are there any other worthwhile places left for me to visit?

I think this list must mention Pop Culture (23 rue Keller).

This shop is in the same street as Born Bad and have a great indie vinyl section.
Most of the store is about comics books but at the bottom you will find a nice record selection. He works directly with US labels like Captured Tracks, Not Not Fun, Hozac,Mexican Summer ect...

He also have the relase of french labels (Desire,SVN SNS Records,Atelier Ciseaux...).

Great selection of cds and tapes too.

This is definitely a place to go if you are in garage rock, Post-Punk, synth-pop and all the indie and experimental stuff.

Yeah. It's agood place. I buy often ther, even if it's a bit pricey.

Currently two weeks into a month in Paris and have visited a lot of stores so far, I am buying 12 inch singles (or Maxi 45s as they are called here) in the pop/alternative/dance/funk/soul genres, pretty broad but I can highly recommend the following for a huge range of good well cared for vinyl stock and friendly/knowledgeable staff:

Betinos - The owner was super-friendly, helped me search out the shelves and prices were reasonable
La Yeti (Rue Jules Valles, Saint Ouen Market) - Massive amount of stock, vinyl in great condition, you can spend hours in here, best in the market by far
Crocodisc - Absolutely great for searching out those rare 12s that you haven't seen in nearly 30 years, prices not extreme

I am going to give a special mention to Music Avenue on rue Paul Bert, the owner here (DJ MaZ) is an absolute legend, went in today, found some 12s (some for 2 or 3 Euros in great condition) and we got talking about a flight case he had in the shop (I'm already planning on how to get the vinyl home to Australia), after showing me a couple of options, he said come back in 2-3 hours and I will have a second-hand DJ bag for you to look at, he then goes home in his lunch hour, brings back his own carry case which holds about 55 LP's and can be taken on as carry on luggage, perfect, exactly what I needed and I still have room to pick up a few more 12's, if you are interested in funk/soul/rap of any description, I cannot recommend this guy enough, possibly the friendliest man in Paris.

I went to Goodie Records in 3 Rue Palestro, Paris on September 2011.
I read on this thread that the owner "is a dinosaur of the vinils records shop in Paris, he is a Soul specialist too, but warning: he is very moody!"

I walked to the door on 11am it was locked. may be he was out to brunch. I came back on 1pm and still locked. maybe he eats a lot. then I came back on 2pm, it was not locked, so I opened the door and get in. there was an old man behind the desk doing his thing. I said hello and walked my self inside. The thread was saying the truth, the collection was huge, from soul/funk and 70's rock. His collections are too large most of them are layed there on the floor. and you could not even get your hands on the rack. so I flick trough what's there on the floor.

After browsing down on my knees for 5 minutes, the old man start asking me in frenchm which I did not understand coz I don't speak french. then he said "what are you looking for?", "Just looking aroung to see if I could find something I desire", I replied. Then with another unfathomable french and a handsign that gesturing "MONEY"(The thumb rubs repeatedly over the tip of the index finger and middle finger) he said "No looking. Go"

WTF!!! and there was no one other than me on the store, so I was the only possible buying customer at the time. a patient one too I should say after waiting him for 3 hours to open the store. and I was about to ask him the price for Hawkwind records since it has no price on it. If he was bit sensible like the poeple at Ground Zero (paris) who immediately recognized my taste just by looking at what I was flicking (even offered me some band that I might going to like) he would get some "MONEY" that he wanted so bad.

So much for the love of music, records bla bla bla. He should change the store name to Greedy Records.

Paris is well worth a visit just to experience SUPERFLY records. Such a great store!!

I agree on RECORD STATION, everything that was even close to a little interesting was 40€+. Still no holy grails though... Has anyone actually bought a record there with those prices?

diskoverrecords : to tell you the truth, Roger carries the reputation of being borderline racist. I've never seen a massive proof of that, and his love of soul and blues should attest the opposite, but I've seen clues. Too bad, because even if he's overselling his stock and knowledge a little, he's still a good source... I suggest you go to Plus De Bruit. Superfly is also a tad overrated. You won't find underpriced records there either, and as they pride themselves of carrying holy grails, you might get disappointed...

I just got back from a trip to Paris and had a great time at La Dame Blanche. Great selection of jazz records. Everything I just added to my collection (except the two Jaco records) came from an hour or so browsing there. Very helpful staff, a little pricey but not outrageous. The "secret" shop around the corner is where the real action is. Definitely worth a visit for jazz collectors or fans looking for discs in great condition.

I also hit up Bouliner, but was unimpressed. Disorganized and poor selection (again, only shopping for jazz. Can't comment on anything else).

My only regret on the trip is I was record shopping on Monday, so Crocojazz was closed.

La Dame Blanche has nothing to do with the flea market area, it's right by le Pantheon and close to Sorbonne

I often go to Zic et Bul on Avenue de la République, as it seems to me that has an amazing choice of UK and US first press and rarities (probably the best I saw in paris), unfortunately prices are a bit too high. It's good to spend some time there however as the owner is knowledgeable and you can listen to the record on two decks with earphones. A first sight it looks like they have an enormous stock of records.

However the whole shop is very poorly organized, originals are mixed with many reissues, and there are acually very few original UK or US press. The few "rarities" they have on the wall are totally overpriced (They sell a US Decca of The Who Sell Out for 200 EUR!!).
Owners are also grumpy.
The only good side is their location and proximity to transports.

I'd recommend Crocodisc on rue des ecoles (RER B stop Saint Michel/Subway stop Odeon) - that's the place to go if you're lookin for specific stuff by name. I've found most of the mid 90's french rap I was looking for in that shop, so it might be the safest bet for you as well. BUT if you wanna go crate diggin, then hit up BOULINIER by the crossing of Blvd Saint Michel & Saint Germain (v. close to the aforementioned store) - that place is a fukin gold mine, with 3 floors to dig around on. Have a good one man, and don't forget to get wasted on some french wine! ;)

Boulinier St Michel is not really good, they have piles of crap and beat-up records and you will be very lucky to find something interesting there ... but who knows. Crocodisc is allright but don't expect a lot either.

If you want vinyl, then you should forget those above addresses. You might find second hand stuff close by at Democracy (formely Silly Melody), for new warp etc stuff, go to Gibert Joseph, also in the same area. You might also find some stuff second hand at Le Rideau De Fer, Exodisc or Plus De Bruit

oh, and for other electronic music more on the dance side, there sure is Techno Import, but more stuff closer to electronica at Syncrophone on same street. You might also fin some at Toolbox

basically speaking you would find the latest warp or autechre simply at the Fnac shop.

Quick comment on Crocodisc. Went through the rock store today (did not have time to properly go through the jazz & soul shops). Ok selection on the surface, BUT two crucial problems: the conditions are varied, to put it nicely, and not marked on the records (meaning that everybody takes the records out of their sleeves); and the pricing is high and random (25 euros for G+ Second Edition by PIL?), not reflecting the conditions of the records. Despite the impressive first impression, after going through the goods I am left with a feeling that the guys do not care for the stuff they sell; records without inner sleeves, water damaged sleeves sold for NM prices, etc... quite a disappointment. Bought a few vinyls though after thorough digging, so there were also releases in which the pricing/quality ratio was OK, but it bugs me if when I cannot trust the shop.

I totally agree but Crocodisc has never and will never be a place to buy collectors and rarities. It is the kind of shop which sells vast piles of low-priced records, mainstream bands. You can buy small records there for 20/25 euros but don't expect much.
For collectors and originals uk / us presses in mint condition I recommend Zic et Bul it is by far the best store in Paris for prog/psyche/pop rock in perfect condition but at a very expensive price. Cheers

Ha! Zic & Bul is borderline sham. ALl records are vastly overpriced appart from the trash. YOu might get lucky occasionaly, but don't even bother if your time is ltd. You'll find better deals at Rideau De Fer or Plus de Bruit.

You'd better go to Goodies Records, definitely the best 2nd hand vinyl store in Paris!

Ok, you have to walk ON vinyls, literally! there you can find tons of soul funk & jazz, as well as french library music, italian composers.. prices are quite high but you can haggle over the price, you HAVE TO! the owner is an old grumpier man but after a while begins to suggest good records..he doesn't speak english.

Highly reccomended!

Toolbox more for all electronic stuff; electro, dnb, bass, hymen recs etc. Fargo was the only disappointment with boring and narrow crates, 90% rock.

One very positive thing I noted about Parisian stores was that their 2nd hand stock was in very good condition. It came as such a nice surprise after getting used to the shit standards London stores so often offer.

I don't know much soul and jazz but for jazz I believe you have many addressesl listed above in Paris including la Dame Blanche, Paris Jazz Corner, etc depending on your budget and what you are looking for

For soul I visited once Crocodisc Soul which has a dedicated store for soul and world music but they store mostly common stuff . I would suggest Betino's or Superfly

I'm about to spend a week in Paris and want to do some record shopping while I'm there.
I'm predominantly looking for House, Techno and HipHop 12"s from any year.
On a budget so looking bargains but happy to spend the time and dig for them.

yes indeed, Aurélien left the shop, so not much action there anymore. They had a few great providers, but that was so seldom... Anyhow, I'm pretty sure last two times I stopped by (December and February) it was closed. With their stock, they'll probably do something with it, but as of now, the shop doesn't exist anymore at that adress anymore.

Hip hop? Paris isn't as good as it used to be in that regard. I guess your best bets are Groove Store and Betino's. What kind of hip hop you lookin for?

I've visited the flea market at Porte de Clignancourt some months ago, the record shops at the first floor as you described were still there. Although I must say that browsing was very uncomfortable as everything was stacked very tightly. And when I tried to check a David Bowie cd box set which they had on display I was called off by the owner in a very unfriendly way 'Don't touch' - this was the last record shop on the left side. Prices were very expensive in all of these stores. I ended up in not buying anything there, yet I found a nice record shop outside this building on Rue Jean-Henri Fabre, friendly owner, good discounted selection and he agreed on a further discount on a mutiple purchase.
Still, the whole 'marché aux puces' is worth a visit, next to the record stores at 'La dame blanche' was a cool exhibition of toy robots - no entry fee and definitely worth seeing!
And there are so many excellent restaurants in Paris, Tripadvisor will help you!

One great store missing from the list is "Balades Sonores". They sell new and second hand - covering rock, jazz, funk, soul, latin, afro, indie, electronica, hiphop. They recently expanded to the shop next door and have band showcases most Thursdays. The owner, Toma, is very friendly and the stock is in good condition - prices are fair. They also sell turntables.
Address is 1 Avenue Trudane, metro Anvers (just south of the Sacre Coeur)

Of the others, Music Please is definitely worth a visit. The owner, Slim, is very knowledgable and enthusiastic, but they don't accept credit cards.

Monster Melodies usualy has loads of cheapo french variété/pop 7"s on the ground floor, hence the recomendation
