Second husband of Edith Piaf, he recorded the hit "A Quoi Ca Sert L'Amour" with her in 1962. He died in a car accident on August 28, 1970 in Limoges, . His stage name "Sarapo", pronounced in French, resembles the Greek "Je t'aime" and was chosen for him by Piaf.
